The overall aim of the secondary science program is to promote scientific literacy by achieving three overall goals for every student: understanding the basic concepts of science; developing the skills, strategies and mindset for scientific inquiry; and relating science to technology, society and the environment (“STSE”). These goals are the basis on which student achievement in science is assessed. In Grades 9 and 10, four disciplines of the sciences - Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Space Science and Physics - are treated as strands or units within each course. In Grades 11 and 12, four types of courses are offered: university preparation, university/college preparation, and workplace preparation. These courses are offered in both “Science” and the specific disciplines of “Biology”, “Chemistry”, “Earth & Space Science” and “Physics”. You may refer to the “Flowchart for Science” for sequencing and prerequisites.
The USS Science Department delivers a curriculum that engages students in an active, experimental approach to learning, integrating the connections among science, technology, society and the environment in the context of real-world problems and issues.
