Volunteers at North Durham Hospice have graciously offered to coordinate and facilitate a 7-week bereavement support group to be held at USS during the last period of the day from April 22nd until June 10th. Because the afternoon classes flip from Week 1 to Week 2, the students would not miss the same class each week. Students can be signed up for the group by contacting Mrs. Allen or Mr. Houston in the Guidance office.

Just recently thirty-five lucky students participated in the Canadian and World Studies sponsored annual trip to Europe on March Break. While in Spain & Portugal, the students experienced the history and culture of Madrid, Toledo, Avila, Segovia, and Salamanca in Spain, and Porto, Coimbra, Aviero, Braga, and Lisbon while in Portugal. In addition to the incredible cathedrals, churches, medieval walls, and Roman ruins, our students also experienced both the food and music of these magnificent countries (we enjoyed a Fado evening, and those yummy egg custard tartlets). All returned tired but happy, filled with great memories of a March Break well spent.
Next year, the Canadian and World Studies department is proud to offer another amazing March Break experience: The Rivieras to Rome: France and Italy. Forty lucky students will have the opportunity to experience Nice, Monaco, Cinque Terra, Florence and Rome. Anyone interested in participating in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity should see Mr. Walker as soon as possible.

TopGrade 9 Women in Technology Students compete
December 09, 2008

Mr. Wood
On December 2, four of our grade 9 students from our Women in Technology class traveled to Newmarket to compete in the Skills Ontario Cardboard Boat Races. Ame, Janai, Shannon, and Katrina competed with 14 schools from different school boards, some as far away as Shelburne and Barrie. These four ladies’ innovative design had all the judges and teachers abuzz with how well they thought they would do.
The ladies lost out in the medal round only because of an unfortunate tipping accident. Their design was able to hold over 400lbs for the 90 seconds duration of the weight challenge and may have been the best in the tournament.
Congratulations Ladies!!
TopSCIENCE TRIP TO THE PERIMETER INSTITUTE!
November 20, 2008

L. Stuparyk & L. Lim-Cole
The Uxbridge Secondary School Science Department is excited about this rare opportunity to visit The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics with a group of senior physical science students. Ms. Lim-Cole, Ms. Stuparyk and Mr. Kouba are accepting applications from interested senior science students to attend a lecture and participate in tours at The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and Waterloo University.
Dr. Ben Schumacher will be presenting a lecture on "The Physics of Impossible Things". Professor Schumacher is a faculty member at Kenyon College and is one of the founders of quantum information theory. He introduced the term "qubit", invented quantum data compression (also known as Schumacher compression) and established several fundamental results about the information capacity of quantum systems. Dr. Schumacher was the recipient of the 2002 Quantum Communication Award (premier international prize in the field) and was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
The selected students will also be given guided tours of this world-renowned research facility and the University of Waterloo. They will dine at the “Black Hole Bistro” in the Perimeter Institute. We hope that this unique enrichment opportunity will challenge our students to "think big" and to aspire to become true scientific innovators of the future.
